Identify which part is not charging
The case, left earbud, and right earbud have separate battery readings. A status light that comes on briefly and then turns off can be normal while charging; an unlit light alone is not a diagnosis. If AirPods are paired, check the case and both earbuds on iPhone, iPad, or Mac. If they cannot connect, start with wired power and the case light. A pairing problem belongs to the connection guide. The way to view battery status varies by model and host device.
When one side stays empty but the case and other earbud gain charge, check how that earbud sits in the case and its contact area. When both remain empty, establish that the case itself has power first.

| Symptom | First check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Case shows no response | Outlet, adapter, cable, and port | Supply wired power for at least 15 minutes |
| Wireless charging fails | Case compatibility, placement, pad power | Cross-check with a matching cable |
| Only one earbud stays empty | Seating, individual readings, contacts | Clean safely for the exact model and retry |
| Battery rises but pairing fails | Bluetooth list and audio output | Use the connection guide |
Use wired power to isolate the charging pad
Place both AirPods in the case and close the lid. Connect the case with the matching Lightning or USB-C cable to a known-working adapter and wall outlet for at least 15 minutes, as Apple recommends. Make sure both ends are secure, then try another known-working supply if needed. Do not continue charging damaged or wet equipment.
Only compatible cases charge wirelessly. For a supported Qi or MagSafe case, close the lid and place the case on the powered charger with its status light facing up. The light may illuminate for only a few seconds. Reposition the case if needed, then test with a cable to distinguish a pad or placement problem from a case-power problem.
- Identify the case connector and whether this case supports wireless charging.
- Charge with a known-working outlet, adapter, and matching cable for at least 15 minutes.
- If only wireless charging fails, check pad power and placement, then test by cable.
- Record which power source actually increases the case and earbud readings.
If one earbud will not charge, check its seating
Open the case near a paired device and compare the left, right, and case readings. Reseat both earbuds and look for a charging symbol and a rising level on the affected side. If the case has power but the same earbud never charges, look for visible debris on that earbud and its corresponding case contact area.
Follow Apple's cleaning guidance for the exact model. Do not scrape the contacts with metal, flood the case with liquid, or use high-pressure air. Allow everything to dry fully before charging. If both earbuds charge but one remains silent, use the separate one-ear audio guide instead of repeatedly cleaning the port.
A charging limit is different from a failure
Check whether the displayed percentage belongs to the case or an earbud and whether it changes over time. Optimized Battery Charging can delay a full charge based on usage patterns. AirPods Pro 3 can also use an Optimized Charge Limit. Neither is the same as a case that never gains power, one missing earbud reading, or a battery that stays at zero.
If you use AirPods Pro 3 and need a full charge, check the Battery options in AirPods settings on a paired iPhone or iPad for a temporary or persistent Optimized Charge Limit choice. Menu labels depend on the software version. Avoid repeated resets for a single paused percentage.
Reset or seek service only after the power checks
If power, cables, case compatibility, separate readings, and safe cleaning have not resolved the problem, follow Apple's reset instructions for your exact model. Resetting removes pairing and custom settings, so you must reconnect afterward. Newer and older cases use different gestures; do not guess from appearance.
Contact Apple or an authorized provider if the case gains no charge from multiple known-working power supplies, the same earbud never charges, or there are signs of liquid, excessive heat, or deformation. Stop repeated charging of damaged equipment. Record the model, separate battery readings, power supplies, and results. We have not tested your device and cannot determine warranty coverage remotely.
